How to Use a Car Jack

Car-Jack

So, you’ve found yourself on the side of the road somewhere in Waynesville with aflat tire. You’ve looked in your trunk and have managed to locate your spare tire, jack, and even some jack stands. If this is your first time changing a tire, you may not know how to use a car jack. Ourservice center wants to make sure you’re safe on the road, so we’ve put together the handy guide below on how to use a jack for a car.

How to Use a Jack for a Car and Jack Stands

Hopefully, you have access to jack stands and tire chocks. If not, make sure the car is secure on the jack once the car is jacked up and that the jack itself is locked into place. Otherwise, follow the directions below on how to use a car jack.

How to Use a Car Jack and Jack Stands

  • Find a safe, level spot and pull over. If there is no level spot nearby, pull over anyway. Just make sure you’re a safe distance from the road. Do not drive on a flat tire!
  • Wedge a tire chock, brick, or block under each good tire. Most Houston area drivers don’t own tire chocks, so they will have to make do without them.
  • Loosen the lug nuts, but don’t entirely remove them, before you jack up the car. Waiting to do this after the car is jacked up can result in you exerting enough pressure to knock the car off the jack.
  • Look for the closest reinforced notched area on the frame closest to the tire that needs to be replaced. Place the jack under the notch.
  • If you have a scissor jack, insert the rod and crank. If you have a hydraulic jack, insert the handle into the jack’s body and pump the handle. Lift the car to the height you want.
  • Adjust your jack stands to the desired height by removing the pin and sliding the rod into place.
  • Jack up the car until it’s higher than your jack stands, slide the jack stands under the car, then lower the car onto the jack stand.
  • Remove the lug nuts and the flat tire. Place the lug nuts in the hub of the flat tire so you don’t lose them.
  • Reattach the tire and the lug nuts. Screw on the lug nuts so that they are only finger-tight.
  • Jack the car up off of the jack stands, then remove the jack stands.
  • Jack down the car, then tighten the lug nuts the rest of the way.
